The montane grassveld of the Mountain Zebra National Park is striking in its scenic beauty with its typical karoo flat topped hills and open vistas. It is home to typical grassland species such as Black Wildebeest and Cape Mountain Zebra as well as numerous larks, pipits and cisticolas. Numerous Rock Art sites are also scattered through the reserve.

Accommodation varies between camping, comfortable self-catering accommodation and luxury guest houses. A fully licensed restaurant is available as is a picnic area and swimming pool for residents. The shop sells curios and basic commodities and fuel is available. Conferencing facilities are available.

Mountain Zebra National Park is situated on the R61 and is 12km’s from Cradock on the road towards Graaf-Reinet. It is 262 km’s from Port Elizabeth.

Best Time to Photograph
Early mornings and evenings are best for driving around to search for photographic subjects, but it is worth spending the whole day wandering through the camp looking for birds to photograph.

The camp gardens provide good opportunities for bird photography with many of the smaller species being well habituated to humans.
Recommended Gear
A solid beanbag is a must for photographing from the vehicle. Telephoto lenses are a priority for bird and animal photography.

The area is malaria free with warm summers and cool winters. Nights can be particularly cold in winter with regular snowfalls occurring on the high-lying areas.

Site Highlights
A walk through the camp provides a wide range of species that inhabit the Acacia thickets. Rooiplaat Loop is good for general game viewing and viewing of Larks & Pipits. The Kranskop loop provides hill slopes with the river valley being flanked with Acacia Woodland.
