This piece of bushveld with undulating hills and valleys and mixtures of thickets and open grasslands provides an excellent and varied setting for approximately 280 different species of birds. It forms part of a larger biosphere reserve, where numerous other photographic and holiday opportunities exist.

Located in the Natal Midlands, Weenan Game Reserve offers excellent game viewing and bird watching opportunities, which are within easy driving distance of Pietermaritzburg. The undulating landscape provides for numerous habitats that are home to a wide variety of plants and insect species. General plains game is common.

Getting There
Weenan Game Reserve is situated 25kms north east of the town of Estcourt. Estcourt can be easily reached via the N3 and lies about an hours drive north of Pietermaritzburg. From Estcourt take the road to Colenso for 3kms and then turn right, following the signs to Weenan Game Reserve.

Photography

Best Time to Photograph
Game and birds are most active in the early mornings and late afternoons. Birding in the picnic and camp-sites are good for mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

Photographic Tips
Driving slowly along the network of roads will bring best results for finding a diversity of photographic species. Many of the bird species are small, shy and cryptic and having the camera ready is a must for being able to photograph them.
Recommended Gear
Long-lenses are must for bird photography and it is advisable to have a good window-mount or beanbag in place on open windows at all time. It is worth walking through picnic and camps sites with the camera already mounted on the tripod, as this will allow quick response time.

Season and Weather
The reserve is situated near the Natal Midlands, which generally has a mild climate with rain falling in the summer months, often accompanied by heavy thunderstorms. Winters can be extremely cold.
