Papkuilsfontein Farm is situated about 25 km south of Nieuwoudtville. It borders the Namakwaland, Hantam Karoo, Bokkeveld, Boesmanland and the Knersvlakte. At just over 400km's drive from Cape Town and about 52 km east of Vanrhynsdorp and the N7, it is in easy reach.
The farm has a long conservation history and is very supportive of allowing researchers access to the farm. The farm is best known for the variety of wetlands that it supports, from fresh water springs, a long valley bottom, extensive seep wetlands and several pans. These are of high biodiversity significance supporting many endangered plant species. During early spring, vast fields of flowers cover the veld and a slow walk through these fields will provide excellent photographic opportunities and an impressive species list.
Flowers appear from late March to October, but peak in August and September, depending on the winter rainfall levels. The farm is well know for it's fields of Yellow Bulbinella (Bulbinella latifolia), Rock Art, Waterfall and gorge. It has a 4x4 trail and also offers farm tours (by arrangement). The farm has several accommodation options. The farm has recorded over 146 species of birds and the local specials include Verauxs (Black) Eagle, African Black Harrier and Ludwig's Bustard.
