The Heuningberg Nature Reserve lies on the slopes of Bredasdorp and consists of mountain fynbos that hosts a wide variety of flowers and bird species that make excellent photographic subjects.

Within very easy walking distance of the Bredasdorp town, the nature reserve has a good network of  paths that criss cross the slopes while also giving excellent views over the town and surrounding crop lands. Differing flowering species occur throughout the year and include the localized Bredasdorp Lilly.

Best Time to Photograph
Early morning and late afternoon provide the best lighting conditions for flower photography. Although flowers can be found throughout the year late spring is generally the best time for a large variety.

Photographic Tips
Early mornings are generally better for floral photography before the wind starts blowing. Some flower species flower only for very short periods and so repeated trip must be undertaken on a regular basis.
Recommended Gear
Macro, wide-angled zoom and medium length zoom lenses on a tripod with cable release are best for flower photography. Long telephoto lenses are best for photographing the endemic fynbos birds. A reflector is also useful for lighting flowers.
