Favorite Birding Sites: Papkuilsfontein - Niewoudville

Birding is one of the fastest growing sectors of the international tourism market and here in South Africa we are particularly well blessed with both a diversity of special places and a variety of bird species, many of which are endemic.

With the rapid development of digital cameras, many birders have now taken the next step from wanting to notch up an impressive species list to also wishing to try and capture the birds on camera. I have been extremely privileged to travel widely over the country and have decided to start sharing my favorite birding sites through my blog site and on Photodestination. This will hopefully encourage others to explore new areas, support our tourism market and the conservation of these special places.

Papkuilsfontein, a farm situated about 20km’s out of Nieuwoudville has a long conservation history and is very supportive of allowing researchers access to the farm. The farm is best known for the variety of wetlands that it supports, from fresh water springs, a long valley bottom, extensive seep wetlands and several pans. These are of high biodiversity significance supporting many endangered plant species. During early spring, vast fields of flowers cover the veld and a slow walk through these fields will provide excellent photographic opportunities and an impressive species list. The nearby Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve is also thought to be one of the last viable breeding areas for the critically endangered Clanwilliam sandfish

Birding is excellent with Cape Clapper Larks, Grey-Winged Francolin and Southern Black Korhaan being the most obvious. The deep gorge also holds breeding Verreaux’s Eagle, Booted Eagle, Jackal Buzzard, Rock Kestrel and Spotted Eagle Owl. The extensive seep that runs across the farm is a haven to breeding African Marsh Harrier, Cape Grassbird and Yellow Bishops. During the rainy season and when the pools are full, a variety of waterbirds including African Spoonbill can be seen. In the cultivated lands Karoo Korhaan, Ludwig’s Bustard, Black Harrier and Blue Cranes are regularly encountered.  A full and impressive bird list is available on request from Papkuilsfontein.

Accommodation is also available on the farm and consists of beautifully renovated cottages that lie near the river and wetlands. There is also a superb restaurant, several hiking routes, a 4x4 trail and access to a spectacular waterfall overlooking Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve. Nearby lies the impressive quiver tree forest and glacial striations.
