Enseleni Nature Reserve is an excellent bird watching location that lies just off the N2 highway and is the perfect stopover en-route to the Zululand Game Reserves.

The reserve allows one to walk and there are two excellent short trails that cover the variety of scenic habitats. Small game species such as Red Duiker and Banded Mongoose are fairly common and there is wide diversity of butterflies and insects to be seen in the summer months. This is one of the best locations to view the shy African Finfoot

Photographic Tips
For photographing the African Finfoot it is necessary to walk slowly and quietly along the riverbank, stopping for periods to scan and locate the birds, which are shy to intrusion. Walking with the camera already mounted on a tripod is advisable as many views of game and birds are brief. Birds are more relaxed around the picnic spots and parking areas.
Recommended Gear
A good camera-hiking bag with straps for attaching your tripod is necessary for walking in this reserve. A rain cover for all your camera gear is always necessary as unexpected rainstorms can occur. Zoom lenses are ideal so as to limit the weight that needs to be carried. A full range of lenses from macro through to long range telephoto lenses are required for the diversity that Enseleni offers.
